Outer Hebrides Explorer
This voyage is about embracing the wild beauty of the Outer Hebrides. Each island offers something unique—whether it’s the seabird cliffs of the Shiants, the solitude of the Monach Isles, or the stories woven into Mingulay.
Weather Shapes the Journey
The Outer Hebrides are remote and exposed to the Atlantic, the Minch and Sea of the Hebrides. Where we go will always depend on the weather, tides, and the crew’s spirit of adventure. Every island listed is a possibility, not a guarantee. That’s part of the magic—no two voyages are ever the same.
St Kilda – A Bonus, Not the Goal
If conditions allow, we will set course for St Kilda, with its dramatic sea stacks and historic village: a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for both its extraordinary natural beauty and its deep cultural legacy. If we make land fall, we will anchor in Village Bay, we step ashore on the main island of Hirta. It’s been nearly 90 years since the last St Kildans were evacuated, but their stories remain in the land. Walk along the old “High Street,” hike the hills past scattered cleits (dry stone storage huts), and meet the wild Soay sheep that roam freely. Today, Hirta is home to seasonal staff from the National Trust for Scotland, defence personnel, and scientists. A local ranger will welcome you ashore and offer guidance for your time on the island.
But this is not the main point of the voyage. The true heart of the adventure lies in the wider Hebrides themselves—the Shiants, Mingulay, Taransay, and countless other gems that make this archipelago so extraordinary.
The Spirit of the Outer Hebrides Explorer
This is a demanding but rewarding journey: long passages, rugged landings, and hikes across wild terrain. It asks for flexibility and a love of adventure. In return, it offers unforgettable days among some of the most remarkable islands in Europe.
This trip is quite unique and an absolutely amazing experience. Leaving from Mallaig, our voyage focuses on getting out to St Kilda if sea and weather conditions are favourable. Scotland in all seasons is very changeable and the itinerary depends on the waves and wind we encounter. In 2026 Selkie is offering 10 day voyages. This is a fantastic way to explore many wonderful and beautiful islands on the way there and back. On previous trips we have visited St Kilda, Mingulay, the Monach Isles, Taransay, the Shiant Isles, Loch Scavaig and the Small Isles. The wildlife we see is incredible, as are the vistas. On the first two trips our final anchorage is Selkie’s home port of Eigg, another island jewel for beauty, sustainability and community.
